Tanz Centre
In a groundbreaking study, the Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases at the University of Toronto has challenged the prevailing view of early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Traditionally, it was believed that Alzheimer’s-related memory loss and cognitive decline were primarily caused by the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain. However, the recent research findings have shed new light on this debilitating condition.
Alzheimer’s Research Study
The study suggests that Alzheimer’s may actually begin with damage to the brain’s blood vessels, leading to reduced blood flow and subsequent cognitive impairment. This paradigm shift opens up new possibilities for early detection, prevention, and targeted treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.
The study’s findings provide hope for a breakthrough in understanding and combating this widespread neurodegenerative disorder.

By the end of the summer, Ontario hopes to have fully vaccinated the majority of its population. Residents who want to have their shot sooner should reschedule their second appointments when they become eligible. Individuals can choose to wait for their already scheduled appointments. Vaccines will aid in the prevention of COVID-19. They help the body fight the illness. The pandemic will not be over until the majority of Ontarian’s, and Canadians across Canada, have received vaccinations. By being vaccinated, you can protect yourself, your family, and your community.

The City of Toronto is working with all our healthcare partners, pharmacies and Toronto Public Health to administer all available COVID-19 vaccines. Read more about these efforts by clicking here.
Mobile teams are stepping up efforts across the city, in order to reach communities in hot spot areas. The City of Toronto will open three more COVID-19 immunization clinics tomorrow.
“The addition of these new clinics will ensure nine City-operated immunization clinics are operating across Toronto – the backbone of the Team Toronto approach to the vaccination rollout. Once all nine of the City-operated vaccination clinics are open tomorrow, City-run clinics will have a weekly vaccination capacity based on anticipated supply of more than 10,000 doses per day. These capacity can be increased if additional supply were to become available from the Government of Canada.”
For more information on the roll out, and the postal codes involved in the hot spots go to the City of Toronto website.

Things are looking bright for Dan Leibu and League Inc., a digital health and benefits platform he founded with three friends two years ago in Toronto.
League plans to triple staff to as many as 200 by the end of the year and start offering services in the U.S. The company provides an alternative to traditional benefit plans offered by insurers, targeting small and medium-sized businesses that appreciate its flexibility and easy access. It received $25 million in venture funding last year from one of Canada’s largest pension plans, among others.
“We’re just racing to catch up with the demand,” Leibu, 43, said in an interview in the company’s office in the MaRS Discovery District, an innovation hub that fosters technology and medical start-ups like League in the city’s hospital row, where much of the country’s publicly funded science research is carried out.

Liver cancer is to blame for more than a thousand deaths every year in Ontario — and most of these occur in the Greater Toronto Area. In fact, the epidemic level of liver cancer in this city often goes unrecognized, as it’s diluted by provincial and national statistics.
So what is it about Toronto that makes it such a hot spot for this type of cancer?
Most of the cases occur in patients with chronic liver disease, typically due to chronic blood-borne infections with the hepatitis B or C viruses.
The transmission of hepatitis B occurs mainly from mother to child and is prevalent in several regions of the world. Immigrants from East Asian and African communities are at an especially elevated risk of carrying hepatitis B, and of developing liver cancer. Hepatitis C is found throughout the world and mainly spread through sharing and inadequate sterilization of needles and syringes. Those who’ve been exposed to infected blood are also at a higher risk — and adults born between 1945 and 1975 are much more likely to have been exposed to hepatitis C. Both infections are silent, with no symptoms until it is too late.
