Medical Data & Who’s Got It?

Medical Data & Who’s Got It?

Companies are increasingly using the huge amount of medical data they collect for research. It’s a business worth billions of dollars, and sometimes those discoveries can be the foundation of new profit-making products and companies. But who is profiting from your medical data? Its an interesting situation. More worrying to see is what has happened in the past, with critical patient data. Some interesting articles below:

DeepMind’s  foray into digital health services continues to raise concerns. The latest worries are voiced by a panel of external reviewers appointed by the Google-owned AI company to report on its operations after its initial data-sharing arrangements with the U.K.’s National Health Service (NHS) ran into a major public controversy in 2016.

The DeepMind Health Independent Reviewers’ 2018 report flags a series of risks and concerns, as they see it, including the potential for DeepMind Health to be able to “exert excessive monopoly power” as a result of the data access and streaming infrastructure that’s bundled with provision of the Streams app — and which, contractually, positions DeepMind as the access-controlling intermediary between the structured health data and any other third parties that might, in the future, want to offer their own digital assistance solutions to the Trust.

Immunization Records – “It’s too bad because it’s the kids and parents that are caught in a 1970s-style cumbersome process.”

A total of 5,063 public elementary students were suspended in Toronto this school year after getting caught in what one doctor called, a “1970s-style, cumbersome process” over immunization records.

The number of students suspended amounted to 7 per cent of the 73,262 elementary students in 586 Toronto public elementary schools assessed by Toronto Public Health from July to mid-December 2017. That’s a jump from 5.6 per cent last year.

“All of the students who were suspended either didn’t meet the immunization requirements as they were not up-to-date, their records were not filed on time, or they did not have a valid exemption,” said Dr. Vinita Dubey, associate medical officer at Toronto Public Health.

Your Personal Health Data in #Ontario and it’s value as an asset?

Your Personal Health Data in #Ontario and it’s value as an asset?

Interesting article written in the Huffington Post this week regarding EMR and changes in the medical software landscape. Seems that there is a lot being written on the potential use of patient data. As quoted in the article “value assessment of Ontario’s digital health assets and all related intellectual property and infrastructure.” This is starting to make some question the long term plans for your personal medical data in Ontario.

Is Selling Your Health Data The Liberals’ Budget-Balancing Plan?

Last week, Ontario’s Liberal Government announced plans to consider monetizing the data stored by eHealth Ontario. In an open letter to Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Business Adviser Ed Clark, Health Minister Eric Hoskins asked him to do a “value assessment of Ontario’s digital health assets and all related intellectual property and infrastructure.” Additionally, he asked that Clark look at ways to maximize the value of these assets.

This type of data is a treasure trove for private businesses and would be worth a lot of money to them. Just look at how Facebook has been able to monetize the personal information it has stored on all its “friends.”

But wait, isn’t your personal health data stored at your physician’s office, not at eHealth?

With the controversial electronic health agency’s 10-year mandate expiring at the end of 2017, Queen’s Park is looking at what’s next for eHealth.

Health Minister Eric Hoskins on Friday asked Premier Kathleen Wynne’s privatization guru, Ed Clark, for help “in valuing public and private assets with respect to Ontario’s digital health strategy.”

“I would ask you to provide the government with a value assessment of Ontario’s digital health assets and all related intellectual property and infrastructure,” Hoskins wrote in an open letter to Clark.
