Ransomware payments in 2017 will hit a record $2 billion, according to a new research from the cybersecurity firm Bitdefender.
That figure would make 2017 the most costly year ever for ransomware, doubling the $1 billion paid out by ransomware victims in 2016 and skyrocketing above the $24 million paid in 2015. The upward trend will likely continue into 2018 as malware becomes more sophisticated and difficult to stop.

HACKED MEDICAL DEVICES make for scary headlines. Dick Cheney ordered changes to his pacemaker to better protect it from hackers. Johnson & Johnson warned customers about a security bug in one of its insulin pumps last fall. And St. Jude has spent months dealing with the fallout of vulnerabilities in some of the company’s defibrillators, pacemakers, and other medical electronics. You’d think by now medical device companies would have learned something about security reform. Experts warn they haven’t.

Technology runs the world — and 2016 was the year to prove it.
The internet and the gadgets it runs on were at the centre of several of the year’s biggest stories, most notably the U.S. presidential election.
From Facebook’s alleged fake news problem and concerns Russian hackers may have targeted the U.S. presidential election, technology was at the helm of America’s political narrative.
But consumers were also subjected to an increasing amount of cyberattacks and hacking scandals, at least one of which drew attention to the danger of web-connected home devices.
Experts warn the year ahead could be even more volatile when it comes to cyberattacks.

Although many enterprises have user access security measures in place, both on-premises and in the cloud, they may not have enough, warned the Cloud Security Alliance in a new report.
The report, “Identity Solutions: Security Beyond the Perimeter,” was released April 21. It’s based on 325 online interviews conducted worldwide by the CSA. The findings revealed “no significant differences in security solutions used” between respondents who reported a breach and those who didn’t, according to the report, which was sponsored by Centrify, maker of identity security tools for the enterprise.
When asked in the CSA survey if their company had ever reported a data breach, 17% of respondents said yes, 26% said they were unsure, and 57% said no. Of those who said their company had reported a breach, 22% said the breach was caused by compromised credentials.

Canada is lagging behind the U.S., Britain and other countries in defending citizens and businesses against malicious hackers and cyber-criminals, say numerous groups involved in trying to police the internet.
“We’re failing, we’re falling behind,” warns Katherine Thompson of the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance, one of Canada’s largest private-sector high-tech advocacy groups.
“We cannot continue down the path that we’re on right now,” she told CBC News. “We just went through a very long federal election where not one of the major party leaders discussed cyber-security.”
